The Lötschberg is a Swiss north-south route through the Alpen mountains. In 2001, it carried about 5 million net-tons of freight. The route is shared with car shuttle trains for the summit tunnel, transporting 1.3 million road vehicles, and on-the-hour passenger trains, which carried 2.8 million passengers on this route or parts of it. In order to achieve the required speed, freight is moved with 10 hp/ton.
