The hourly DMU operation is friendly to the neighbours of the line. Noise is comparable with two trucks passing by (the underfloor motors are derived from truck engines), and the whistle is used only for crossbuck crossings. If a level crossing is protected by traffic lights, there is no logical reason for whistling.
