Southern Pacific's "Suntan Special"s have been a weekend application of unused commuter cars. From San Francisco, and sometimes Oakland or San Jose, these trains moved weekend tourists directly to the beach. During WW II, the service was stopped in favour of troup transports and other war efforts. The picture shows the arrival of the first "Suntan Special" after reactivation of the service in August 1947.

"Yesteryeardepot" offers lots of "old-times" railroad photography. On that site, there are more photographs of the "Suntan Special" trains.
